The Wild Card Of Life:  Change
Posted by The Interrupters on 02 Nov 2015 / 0 Comment

All things are temporary, Everything changes

One thing you can count on in life is that everything changes.  We like to think that everything in our lives will remain the same and we are very uncomfortable most time when things do change.   We cling to that which is familiar, we even fight for things to stay the same when they are not in our best interest. We become sad, nervous, anxious, and upset when things do change. We are creatures of habit, we like to have peace of mind through security and we regiment ourselves through routine, believing that if we are disciplined enough, we can attain security and things in our lives  will never change.

We are conditioned to believe that life holds security for us if we do the right things; work hard, be fair, be consistent, save money, have a retirement plan and so forth.  The truth is that security, like many things in life, is an illusion.  I am not saying not to work hard, be fair and consistent, save money or have a retirement plan, what I am saying is that “the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry”. So why are we so surprised and thrown off center when they do?

I think the mistake that we make is that we do not have a realistic view of life and the element of change that is inherent in it.  We like to think that we can plan for everything, we can know where we want to be and how we will get there.  We create goals and make lists.  We believe that we alone are in charge of our destiny and while it is always a good idea to have some sense of where you want to be and how you are going to get there, it is also a good idea to expect the unexpected.

The idea that we are in charge of our own destiny is a subtly narcissistic one, to a certain extent it is true, you are the captain of your own ship, however, there are also some factors you cannot control:  life holds many wild cards.  Obstacles, road blocks, gains, losses, unforeseen changes, the list of life’s wild cards goes on and most times they are uncontrollable, unpredictable and take us by surprise.  So what is the best way to face them?

I think that when we become realistic in our selves, we become realistic in our thinking.  If we expect the unexpected, if we expect things to change, if we understand and accept life’s wild cards, we become more flexible in our plans, in our thoughts and in our actions.  When we surrender to change, life becomes easier and the struggle to control diminishes.  When we let go of the need to control and become yielding we allow ourselves to embrace change rather than resist it.

What if you could understand that change always happens in life and you could detach from your attachment of trying to control it?  What if you became okay with change, expected it, anticipated it and looked forward to it?  How would that interrupt feel?
