What is Ego? –

“Ego” is a Latin word meaning “I”, which derives from the Greek word “Εγώ (Ego)” meaning “I”, often used in English to mean the “self”, “identity” or other related concepts.

It may also refer to:

  • one of the three constructs in Sigmund Freud’s structural model of the psyche
  • as defined in various religions in relationship to self, soul etc.
  • the “self”, “self-concept”, “false self”, “conceptual identity”, or identification with individual existence

I, me, mine . . . all of ego, therefore ego seeks ownership, individuality and control. Self, self-concept, false self, conceptual identity or identification with individual existence.

So in a sense, the ego belongs to you and guards that which is you, it erects walls in order to contain that which it believes it owns. The most interesting part of this definition are the words “false self”.

What is our “false self”? Is it that mask we put on to the world so that we can conceal who we really are? Why would we want to do that? What builds our “false self”? How and why is it constructed? Why do we believe that the world will accept our fabricated self and not our authentic self? How do we go beneath the surface of our ego self and reunite with our authentic self?

Perhaps the key is in shifting our mindset from believing that we are individual and separate from all that is into the knowingness of our divine, perfect and pure connection to all that is, all that was and all that ever will be.

After all, if I really “got it” that you and I are connected, why would I ever seek to tear you down, hurt you, lie to you or harm you in any way? If I understood that the earth is connected to me, why would I ever litter or defile it in any way?

If you really knew that your energy was connected to mine and everyone else’s how would your behavior change? How would your attitude toward others and everything living change?
