Fear

We all experience fear, but why?

    • What are we really afraid of?
    • In those situations where you find yourself in fear, what do you do? Fight or flight?
    • Why do we have these responses to fear?
    • Why does it cut us so deeply?

Our hearts beat faster, sometimes we feel the pulse in our throat, chest or belly, it is our visceral response and it occurs in the front of our bodies, where we are most venerable.

What purpose does fear serve? What can we do when we find ourselves in that uncomfortable and sometimes volatile space that we have come to know as fear?

Ultimately the “fear response” is there alerting us to danger, danger which can in some way “kill” some part of ourselves, either metaphorically or literally. Do you fear death? Do you fear some aspect of your self or your life “ending”? If you answered “yes” to one or both of these questions, do you know why?

Are you a person who will stand up and fight in the face of fear, or do you find some way to escape it? Perhaps you may in one situation fight but in another run? Can you think of a recent time when you have had the experience of fear? What did you do?: What was your reaction? Did you even have time to think of a response? Or did it happen automatically?

Most people react to fear automatically, without even thinking. What would it be like if the next time you felt fear you paused, acknowledged your fear and instead of reacting you did an “over ride”, replacing reaction with a conscious and thoughtful response? What would that take? How powerful would it feel to understand what your instincts are telling you while you take the time to consult your higher mind to formulate a response? Could you really interrupt such a pattern?
