Love
Posted by The Interrupters on 12 Jun 2013 / 2 Comments

In our culture we have come to a place of understanding love

in a false way, what I call “false love”.

Somehow we humans express love from ego; perhaps not on a conscious level, but think about it . . . does love really hurt?  When you are loving from your ego it does! Your ego creates not only a false self, but also a false criteria by which to love:

    • I will love you only if you love me
    • I will love you so long as you take care of me
    • I will love you so long as I can be the boss . . . etc.

Our ego can trick us into thinking things which are not true, our ego serves itself and itself only.

What is love anyway?  It is such a broad term to describe how we are feeling, have you ever stopped and observed a behavior then recognized it as love?  Have you spent any amount of time contemplating or defining it for yourself?  In your relationships, do you take the time with your partner(s) to define what you mean by the term?  How do you express it?  How do you know you are feeling it?  What does it look like?  How do you expand your ability to do it?

Our ability and capacity to love others directly mirrors our love for ourselves.  Whether or not we are aware of it, we can only love another as deeply as we love ourselves.  Do you love yourself?  How does your self-love manifest itself in your everyday life?  As we define and question what it is, we are able to expand, explore and live in it.

Where does it come from? Is it a thought, a feeling, a response, a state of being? Someone who understands how to love from their heart understands that by its very definition it would never seek to hurt, nor is it self-serving.

The questions become:

    • How can I expand my understanding of it?
    • Despite my propensity to want to control, manipulate or match hate for hate; how can I love this situation, person, place, community, world?
    • How can I look at my life experiences as a series of challenges to teach me to understand and live in an ever growing state of love and acceptance?

The next time you are inclined to express a negative feeling, when negative energy comes your way, instead of matching that energy with more negativity, ask yourself:

    • How can I defuse this negativity with love?
    • How can I expand my definition of love?
