Why We All Tell Lies
Posted by The Interrupters on 11 Dec 2013 / 0 Comment

Lies –

“Don’t ask a child a question if you are afraid of the truth”

When we come into the world we are innocent, authentic, and have no idea what a lie is. Unfortunately in a matter of time we pick up very quickly that lies are our handiest defense mechanism, our form of denial that keeps us from judgment and ridicule from others so that we can falsely gain their approval. In some cases, telling lies becomes a tool for survival. We become conditioned to deny who we really are and most of us live in some kind of internal conflict hiding our true self and living an unfulfilled life. We walk through life wearing a mask and costume, reciting an approved script in someone else’s play.

Why are most of the people in the world more outer-directed than inner-directed? Why do we look for approval? In Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Needs”, the third level of human needs are love and belonging. We need to love and be loved. Unfortunately we have been force fed a false definition of what love really is. I think we have been socialized to believe that other people’s opinions are more valid than our own. Nothing could be farther from the truth. What would it take to give up your need for approval in your process of loving and being loved?

When we are trying to please others or to get approval of others, we are wearing a mask, the “ego mask”, it is an undercover selfishness. The ego mask covers up our authentic self, donning this mask says, on every level, “who I authentically am is not good enough for the world”, this statement could not be farther from the truth. The truth is that once we relinquish our “ego mask” we become something that no one else can possibly be: OURSELVES. In all the universe there is only one you, you were born to stand out in your own unique way, and so was everyone else on the planet. Remember that when you wear that mask you are lying to the world and far worse, yourself.
